Thailand is a top-three rice exporter, and the trade runs on grade and crop year rather than brand. What should a rice quotation specify?⌄
Grade and variety (for example Thai hom mali 100% grade B), broken percentage, crop year, moisture content, packing (jute, PP woven, or retail bags and what weight), Incoterm, and port. A quote missing broken percentage and crop year is not comparable to another quote.
Should I buy from a mill or an exporter?⌄
A mill can be cheaper and gives more control over grade and crop year, but many mills lack export documentation experience and will not handle the paperwork. A trading house costs more but handles the phytosanitary certificate, fumigation and shipping. For a first container the trading house is usually lower risk.
What documents does a rice shipment need?⌄
Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate, and usually a fumigation certificate. Destination countries add their own requirements — several importing markets require pre-shipment inspection, so check before the container is sealed.
Is jasmine rice always from the northeast?⌄
Genuine Thai hom mali is grown mainly in the northeast, and that origin is part of what the premium pays for. Mills elsewhere do process it, but if origin matters to your market, ask for the growing region and supporting documentation rather than taking the label at face value.
